Made obsolete by aircraft, and seemingly insignificant when compared to the awesome power of nuclear weaponry, in the modern age it is perhaps difficult to comprehend the historic importance of the battleship. 100 years ago the battleship was the most powerful weapon system available. The launch of the H.M.S. Dreadnought by Great Britain signalled the start of a battleships arms race at least on par with the nuclear arms race between the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. later in the century. It was the competition to build battleships that was the major contributing factor in Great Britain's decision to join historic enemy France in 1914 in the war against Germany, turning a largely European conflict into the First World War.
The purpose of this site is to list all of the world's battleships.
