| Sunk at Mers-el-Kebir, 1940. |
Commissioned in 1915, Bretagne served in the Mediterranean during the First World War.
Between the World Wars Bretagne was modernised, with new machinery.
During World War Two, like many other French ships, Bretagne sailed to Mers-el-Kebir to avoid being taken over by the Germans. It was there that the French fleet was attacked by the British on the 3 July 1940 when the French refused to agree to British terms to hand over or decommission their ships. Under gunfire from British Battle-cruiser H.M.S. Hood and Battleships H.M.S. Resolution and H.M.S. Valiant, Bretagne exploded and sank.
